Carcross Desert


Affectionately known as the smallest desert in the world. This area was originally covered by a large glacier

lake. As the glaciers retreated, causing lower glacier levels, sandy lake bottom material was left behind. Strong prevailing winds from Lake Bennett have constantly worked this sand, making it difficult for vegetation to become established. Species of plants that have survived include lodgepole pine and kinnikinnick.

YUKON JADE

Yukon is the home to the largest Jade boulder discovered to date weighting 270 tons. This jade piece weighs 3000 pounds and was part of a 28 ton boulder found 75 miles from Carcross, and was cut by Sidrock Co. of Whitehorse, Yukon.

One of our stops in Carcross was Caribou Crossing. There were lots of tour busses there so we thought it might be interesting. When we started walking to the gift shop we spotted two Dall Sheep on the mountain. I had David take a picture. In fact, everyone was taking their picture. So we watched them for awhile and realized, HEY they were not moving!! Boy did they fool us. I guess they were plastic. Oh well...No fool like an old fool..
